Amael André presents the work of the ‘Observatory’ pole of the PIA3 program, a 10-year initiative involving four French universities (Amiens, Lille, Caen, Rouen) and two academic regions (Normandy and Hauts-de-France). The program aims to study and improve inclusive education from primary to higher education. André defines inclusive education as an accessible environment fostering both academic and psychosocial competencies for all students, with a focus on those with special educational needs. The observatory adopts a multiscale approach, examining student engagement at the classroom, institutional, and territorial levels. Central to the presentation is the concept of engagement, defined as the investment of time and energy in learning, and its multidimensional nature (behavioral, affective, social, agentic, cognitive). The speaker draws on socio-cognitive motivation theories, particularly self-determination theory, to explain engagement. He outlines the three basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy, relatedness) and how their satisfaction or frustration leads to autonomous or controlled motivation. The observatory uses a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, with quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews, following students from 6th grade to university. Preliminary results from secondary education are mentioned, and the talk concludes with perspectives for higher education, including the development of an ’engaging climate’ model for inclusive practices.
